Sharing the Ride

FAMILY DRAMADY | ROMANCE

Logline

When two cats fall in love and hatch a plan to bring their lonely owners together, they unexpectedly transform the lives of a lonely heiress, a nomadic writer, and a neglected young orphan, who each must learn to open their hearts and trust again despite their fear of getting hurt.

Synopsis

Nina Carrington has everything money can buy and nothing that matters. Still haunted by the tragic loss of her family and betrayed by a fiancé who wanted her fortune more than her heart, she has withdrawn from life behind the walls of her sprawling coastal estate. But when she rescues an abandoned kitten, a small act of compassion sets in motion a chain of events that will change her life forever.

The kitten, Rudy, quickly decides his new human companion has a problem. Lonely, isolated, and clearly incapable of fixing her own life, Nina needs help. Then Aidan O'Malley and his beautiful cat, Misty, arrive on the island and turn her quiet world upside down. A wandering novelist who grew up in a carnival family, Aidan has spent years drifting from place to place, gathering stories while avoiding the very thing he secretly longs for: a place to belong. To Rudy, however, the solution is obvious. Convinced their humans are perfect for one another, he and Misty begin a determined campaign of feline matchmaking.

Their efforts bring Nina and Aidan together, but just as a romance begins to blossom, another lost soul enters their lives. Annie, a lonely little girl trapped in the custody of a neglectful aunt, finds herself facing an uncertain future. As Nina and Aidan become involved in Annie's life, what begins as a temporary act of kindness slowly grows into something none of them anticipated.

Through humorous misadventures, hard-won trust, and the quiet wisdom of two cats who understand more about love than their humans do, three wounded souls discover that family is not defined by blood, circumstance, or convention. It is created by the people who choose one another, make room for one another, and stay beside one another for the ride.

A heartfelt family dramedy told through the eyes of a charming feline narrator, Sharing the Ride is a story about love, belonging, second chances, and finding home in the most unexpected places.

INT. NINA'S BEDROOM - DAY

Balancing on a windowsill, Rudy rubs his face against Nina's cheek as she pets him. She smiles, then gazes out the window.

                                                     RUDY (V.O.)

But that led to another change that would rock our world.

Nina and Rudy see a truck towing a camper coming down the driveway.

Aidan hops out. Nina takes him in – a rugged, unshaven man in jeans with a T-shirt that wraps tightly around his muscular chest and arms. He looks around.

Rudy watches Nina take in Aidan, desire in her eyes.

Aidan reaches into the open window and pulls out Misty, a beautiful grey female cat with a white jeweled collar and blue eyes.

                                                     RUDY

Uh oh. This could be dangerous, Nina.

Rudy and Nina stare out the window in a trance-like state.

EXT. HOUSE - DAY

Nina, carrying a rifle, walks down the steps of her front porch to greet the stranger, now wrestling with Frank’s dog.

                                                     RUDY (V.O.)

But the proud Nina didn't want to let anyone
                    into her life.

Aidan sees Nina coming toward him with the rifle and holds up his hands.

                                                     NINA

How did you get in the gate?

Misty paces primly on the roof of Aidan's car, curling her magnificent tail back and forth, watching them.

Rudy sits on the front porch in his regal king-like position to watch Misty.

                                                     RUDY (V.O.)

Kind of like cats, who take a while to open up.

Misty eyes Rudy, then flirtatiously prances around on the truck, showing off for him.

                                                     RUDY (V.O.)

Nina wanted everyone to believe that she didn't need anyone.

                                                     NINA

There's a sign that says no trespassing.

Aidan chuckles as Frank appears.

                                                    FRANK (O.S.)

I let him in. (breathing heavily) Put that rifle down.

                                                    AIDAN

My uncle warned me about you.

Frank walks toward them, slowly. Nina lowers the gun.

Aidan turns and sees Frank and the shape he’s in. His eyes widen, then sadden. He runs to Frank and hugs him.

                                                    AIDAN
Hey old man. What the hell?

                                                   FRANK

                    I told you.

Nina and Aidan help Frank back to the house.

                                                  AIDAN

                    I’m his nephew.

                                                 FRANK

                    I forgot to tell you.

Rudy and Misty follow them into the house.

INT. GUEST HOUSE – DAY

Nina and Aidan help Frank into his chair as Rudy and Misty keep a healthy distance, checking each other out.

                                                 AIDAN
I came as soon as I heard, Uncle. I had no idea
                    it was that bad.
Frank sinks wearily into his chair,
                    breathing heavily.

                                                 AIDAN

                              (to Nina)

Uncle Frank’s been saying you need more help around
here. I need work. I'm strong, and I'm a good carpenter.

                                                NINA

                    Oh yeah, the writer.

                                                RUDY (V.O.)

I could tell she liked him.

                                                NINA

The last I heard, you were driving a moving truck.

                                                AIDAN

That's right. The one who's not doing anything with
                     his life.

Aidan sticks out his hand. Nina shyly shakes his hand.

                                               FRANK

                            (out of breath)

Nina, how many times do I have to tell you this isn't
                    West Virginia?

                                              AIDAN

                    Or the Dark Ages.

                                              FRANK

I'm sorry I forgot to mention...Aidan's gonna stay
for a while, if that's OK.

                                              NINA

                         (Sighing)

Anything for you, Frank. (Looking at Aidan) Your
uncle's been very good to me.

                                              FRANK

She means, I'm her link to the real world.

A FEW MINUTES LATER – FRONT YARD

Aidan climbs into his truck and drives his truck/camper toward the guest house.

Rudy and Misty gaze at each other from a distance.

                                                     RUDY (V.O.)

Now most male species would see an attractive
female and immediately make fools of themselves,
                       especially dogs.

Misty begins strolling his way. They stop about five feet away and begin circling, checking each other out.

                                                     RUDY (V.O.)

Cats, on the other hand, are intelligent. We need to
gather information first, but that can be difficult when
your brain has suddenly turned to mush.

In the background, Aidan has pulled his camper to the side of the guest house.

                                                    MISTY

                                     (flirtatious)

When I realized we were coming back here I thought,
what a bore. But as soon as I saw you perched like a
king on Nina’s porch, things started looking a lot better.

                                                    RUDY

Funny, when I first saw you, I was thinking this place
                       had suddenly gotten exciting.

The two cats close the gap between them and touch noses.

                                                    MISTY

                       Hmmm. Nice.

                                                    RUDY

Beautiful and clever. This could be a problem.

                                                    MISTY

You don’t waste much time, do you?

                                                    RUDY

                       Life’s too short.

The two cats begin to stroll through the grass.

EXT. WOODS - NIGHT

Rudy, running through the woods, hears Dolores' voice and runs toward the road.

Rudy stops at the edge of the woods in time to see Dolores push Annie out of the car.

                                                          ANNIE

                              But where will I go?

                                                         DOLORES

                              Find your perfect family!

Dolores slams the door shut from the inside and drives away.

                                                         RUDY

                              Oh no.

Annie sits on a tree stump and looks around, trying not to be frightened.
She begins to weep.

Rudy reveals his presence by making a rustling sound, and she spins around, dabbing at her eyes, trying to cover up that she's crying.

                                                         ANNIE

                              Who's there?

Annie sees Rudy and her face breaks into a smile through the tears. She runs and scoops him up in her arms.

                                                        RUDY (V.O.)

I wanted to bolt into the woods. She was gonna slow me down.

                                                       ANNIE

                                          (gently)

                              Pretty cat.

Annie strokes Rudy's fur.

                                                       ANNIE

My name's Annie. Dolores, my aunt, she
does this a lot. She'll be back tomorrow and
she'll be really nice. Then I can talk her into
                             bringing you home with me.

                                                       RUDY (V.O.)

I felt so sorry for her, I couldn't leave her alone.

EXT. WOODS - MORNING

Rudy awakens in Annie's lap. She sleeps against a tree trunk.  He stands, awakening her. She smiles, seeing him.

                                                      RUDY

Come on kid. We gotta get you some
                              help.

Rudy heads toward the road and Annie follows. A truck heads toward them in the distance.

                                                      RUDY

                              Hey stop!

Rudy lifts his paw as if he's waving.

INT. AIDAN'S TRUCK - MORNING

Aidan stairs out the window, gripping the steering wheel, Misty curled up in the front seat.

                                                      AIDAN

I can't believe that woman, Misty. We were
lucky to escape from that place.

                                                     MISTY

Speak for yourself, you big dope. She just
                              needed a little more time.

                                                     AIDAN

Come on, cheer up. There are plenty of tom
                              cats in the sea.

                                                    MISTY

Yeah, but there's only one Rudy.

Aidan sees Rudy and Annie ahead and squints.

                                                   AIDAN

                               What the...?

He slows the car down and stops.

EXT. ROADSIDE - MORNING

Rudy sees it's Aidan's truck.

                                                    RUDY

                              It’s Aidan!

Aidan pulls his car over to the side of the road and jumps out.

                                                    AIDAN

                              Rudy?

Misty leaps out after Aidan.

                                                    MISTY

                              Rudy!

                                                    RUDY

                              Misty!

They rub noses.

                                                    AIDAN

                              Who's this, Rudy?

                                                    ANNIE

                               (disappointed)

I guess this is your cat, huh?

Aidan chuckles at Rudy and Misty.

                                                    AIDAN

I guess you guys really love each other.
No, he's not my cat. But I know his owner.

INT. NINA'S KITCHEN - DAY

Nina, an unkempt mess, jabbers incoherently on the phone. Frank tries to comfort her.

                                                    NINA

                                      (Hysterical)

Stripes on the forehead, spots on his
body ...and a little pink nose. No, you didn't
hear me correctly...he doesn't have spots
                              on his face!

Aidan pulls up outside. Nina sees him and starts to fume, until she sees Rudy.

She gasps with relief.

Themes

At its heart, Sharing the Ride is a warm, uplifting story about the unexpected ways love enters our lives and transforms our understanding of home.

  • Family is created through love, not blood.

  • Life's detours often lead to exactly where we're meant to be.

  • Sometimes our greatest teachers and rescuers arrive on four paws.

  • The smallest acts of compassion can change the course of a life.

  • The greatest adventure isn't traveling the world—it's sharing the ride with someone who chooses to stay.

The Ferris wheel becomes a quiet metaphor for the story itself. Though it never leaves its place, every turn reveals a different view. In the end, the greatest adventure isn't reaching somewhere new - it's finding the people who choose to share the ride.

A Secret Turning explores the transformative journey that begins when a life built on certainty collides with a deeper call to truth.
